Off We Go!

Hello All,

It's time for Rick and Rebecca's summer adventure.  This year we decided to go to Spain; a country neither of us have ever been to though we did stop in Seville on our way to Portugal though I'm fairly sure we didn't have to leave the plane.

Complete Route

Rebecca's last day of work was actually the day we left and so the day was rather hectic but everything got done and we were off to the airport.  We had our traditional send off drink before our flight and meandered to our flight to Chicago only to find that there was no plane there.  To make a long story short the plane was late arriving and quite late taking off.  We only had an hour layover and so were were sweating as we made our decent when the captain came on and informed us that we were being held because of traffic.  We both assumed we had missed our connection but blessedly we had about 20 minutes and after running through the airport (I mean, I ran for a while!) we made our flight.  The flight was as most international flights though we both managed about 5 hours of sleep.

Day one in Barcelona was about 55 degrees and rainy.  We unpacked and took about an hour nap after which we had a small snack at "teatime" in our hotel and then headed out to see Gaudi's Casa Mila

The apartment building was really great.  Unfortunately, one of the big draws of touring the Casa Mila is to walk around on the roof but it was closed due to the rain.

We walked for a while to see Gaudi's Casa Batllo but soon were cold and wet and so we ducked in a place for some tapas and cava.  Here is a frito misto.

The Casa Batllo was just around the corner.

We walked for a while, ending up in the Ravel which I assume is the Muslim part of town.  We stopped in a bodega for a glass of vermouth.  I will admit that I was suspicious of the whole drinking vermouth by itself thing but I'm a convert!

We thought this was a good name for a bar.

We had dinner at Casa Brutal.  Here is tuna on a beet puree with broccoli.

Here are meatballs in a very tomatoey tomato sauce with basil.  The meatballs also had squid in them which made them a bit odd I have to admit.

We opted for a cab home and both managed 8 hours of sleep!
